Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears
